Don't Make It Easy for Them: Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Oct 15
2 min read

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year's theme from the National Cybersecurity Alliance is simple: "Don't Make It Easy for Them." The idea is that staying safe isn't about one perfect decision. It's about small, consistent choices that make you a harder target.

For law firms and CPA firms, that message lands differently. You hold client trust accounts, tax records, privileged communications, and financial data. Attackers know it, and they know most professional-service firms run on predictable routines. Breaking that predictability is where real protection starts.

Attackers count on your routines

Most breaches at professional-service firms aren't clever. They exploit habits: the wire request that always comes near closing, the client portal password that never changes, the former employee whose account was never disabled.

Law and CPA firms are especially predictable in a few ways. Deadlines are public (tax season, filing dates, closings). Staff are trained to respond quickly to clients. And many firms assume their MSP or IT provider has security fully covered, without ever checking. Each of these makes an attacker's job easier.

Five ways to make your firm a harder target

  1. Require MFA everywhere it matters. Email, client portals, practice management, tax software, and remote access. One stolen password shouldn't open the door.

  2. Verify every payment change out of band. Any request to change wire instructions or banking details gets a phone call to a known number, not the one in the email. This one habit stops most business email compromise losses.

  3. Treat urgency as a red flag. AI now makes phishing emails, voice calls, and even video convincing. Train staff that a rushed request from a partner or client is a reason to slow down, not speed up.

  4. Close the doors you forgot about. Review who has access to what each quarter. Remove departed staff, old vendor accounts, and unused AI or file-sharing tools.

  5. Know who owns which security task. Your MSP may handle patching and backups, but who tests whether those controls actually work? Write it down so nothing falls between the cracks.

Awareness is a start. Evidence is the goal.

A month of reminders is valuable, but awareness alone doesn't prove anything. Clients, insurers, and regulators increasingly want to see that your controls are in place and working, not just that you believe they are.

That's why we focus on evidence-based security and accountability. Independent testing shows where your firm is actually exposed. Clear documentation shows who is responsible for each control. Together, they turn "we think we're covered" into "here's the proof."

Make October the month you check

There are still two weeks left in Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Use them to find out where your firm really stands, before an attacker does.

Shield IT Networks works alongside your existing MSP or IT team to assess your cybersecurity posture and close the gaps that matter most for law and CPA firms.
